It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Thompson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. John was born in Calgary, Alberta, on March 4, 1952. His early years took him from Kamloops to England and France, before returning to Canada where he lived on the army base in Cold Lake, Alberta. In the early 60s, John and his family made the move to Whitehorse, where he would go on to build a life full of love and laughter.
John later moved to Ottawa in 1965, before eventually returning to Whitehorse, where in high school he met the love of his life, Sandy Fuller. The two were married June 29, 1973, and shared 51 magical years together.
John was known for his kindness, humor, and the unwavering love he had for his family. A man who could always make those around him laugh, John had a way of making people feel welcome and cherished, no matter their background. His ability to listen to anyone and appreciate them for who they were was a gift he shared freely. He was an amazing role model to his children, James and Amy, and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Donovan, Drew, Kaylee, and Tanner. His love for his grandchildren was evident in his playful spirit and his constant involvement in their lives.
John loved to cook, a skill that was greatly appreciated by his family, especially by Sandy, who would gladly admit she wasn’t the best cook herself! A hard worker, John had successful businesses that provided well for his family. He was always proud of his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, and he enjoyed traveling, laughing, and embracing all that life had to offer.
John is survived by his wife Sandy, children James (Katie) and Amy (Peter), grandchildren Kaylee (Jake), Tanner (Paige), Nicholas, Donovan, and Drew, and his siblings David (Wendy) and Pam (Jack). He is predeceased by his parents, Margret Thompson and Dalton Thompson, Stan Fuller and Joyce Fuller.
John was an inspiration to many, leaving a positive impact on everyone he met. He is missed more than words can express, and his family will forever cherish the memories of his warmth, humor, and love. He was the best husband, dad, granddad, and friend anyone could ask for.
We love you, John. We miss you every day, and we look forward to the day we see you again.
