The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Monday, February 10, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Marco Gonzalez, parochial administrator, officiating. Inurnment will follow at Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian. Phillip was born on May 25, 1945, to his parents, Concepcion Cervantes and Guadalupe Garcia, in Canadian. He was born at home—a home he would later share with the love of his life. Phillip lived in Waynoka, Oklahoma, during his childhood and teenage years. It was there that he first saw the love of his life. As Phillip would do throughout his life, he found a way to overcome a challenge—he didn’t speak Spanish, and she didn’t speak English. Thankfully, a mutual friend was able to convince Juana to give him a chance, marking the beginning of a beautiful life together. The couple married in August 1964, and he began his employment with the Texas Department of Transportation. He earned the title of Assistant Foreman and stayed with the department for 37 years. After his retirement in 2001, Phillip couldn’t stay still or indoors. He took pride in keeping his yard and cars clean—many of you most likely saw him taking care of yards around town. “Papo,” as he was affectionately known to many, was a great supporter of the Canadian Wildcats and Ladycats and the Oklahoma Sooners. He loved listening to classic oldies, eating ice cream sandwiches (he had the biggest, sweet tooth), never turned down a good burger, had the best sense of humor, could name the year, make, and model of classic cars from a mile away, and was always up for a ride around town—especially out to Lake Marvin to look for deer.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juana Cervantes; a daughter, Lisa Cervantes of Canadian; a son, Danny Cervantes and his wife, Amber, of Van Buren, Arkansas; and his grandchildren, Dani Lamberti and her husband, Tristen, of Wichita Falls, Phillip Cervantes of Canadian, and Madi, Lauren, and Jackson Cervantes of Van Buren, Arkansas. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Cervantes, and his wife, Ana, of Canadian,; his special niece, Vicky Flores, and her husband, Jose Luis; and Alex Cervantes and his wife, Teresa, of Canadian, along with their children, Jacob and Joaquin Flores and Hondo and Sophia Cervantes; as well as many other nieces and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by his best pal, his great-grandson, Luca Lamberti. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first daughter, Vickie Cervantes; and his brothers, Valentine Cervantes, Lucio Cervantes and his wife, Kim, and Manuel Cervantes and his wife, Mary.
