Stephen James McIntyre

Stephen James McIntyre (Steve) was born January 14th, 1949, in Vancouver, BC. He moved to the Yukon in the 1970s where he met and married his wife, Debbie and raised his three daughters in Faro, Watson Lake and finally Whitehorse. He passed away on February 1st, 2025, surrounded by family at Wind River Hospice House.

Steve was a committed husband, father, Papa and an avid Vancouver Canucks fan. He loved hunting, fishing and had a great appreciation for nature in general. However, family was the most important to him, and this extended to his friends and his children’s friends. Steve welcomed many people into his home at times of need without casting judgment on anyone’s situation. He enjoyed Sunday family suppers and making sure the grandkids had plenty of ice cream treats in the freezer.  He was Debbie’s best friend who always encouraged her to pursue her hobbies such as beading and painting, and he also made sure to comment on her ever-changing nails. He was an honest man with a good sense of humor and a witty response always ready.

Steve was a storyteller; in the years he could no longer independently hunt or fish he enjoyed reminiscing about his adventures in his younger years to anyone listening. He would continue to come along in outdoor activities and provide lessons for his grandchildren and sons-in-law, who always welcomed hearing his tips. Steve valued his time with all nine of his grandchildren, he enjoyed all their different personalities, and was patient and loving to them all. He was the Papa that attended sports events and somehow made his way into the kid’s silly TikTok dance videos just to get a laugh out of them. We know he would have loved to have much more time with his family.

Steve is lovingly survived by his wife of 46 years, Debbie, his 3 daughters and their families – Janel (Dan Boomer – Eva, Natalie, Meredith & Maxwell), Laura (Ray O’Brien – Kennedy & Kadyn) and Rachel (Mike Hrebien – Emersyn, McKenna & Grayson). Along with Travis Dick who has lived with and been cared for by Steve and Debbie for many years.

A huge thanks to the nurses, staff and physicians of Wind River Hospice House who cared for Steve and his family during this tough time. Thank you to our family and friends for all your support.

His family is planning a Celebration of Life in the summer months.
