William (Bill) Venton, aged 65, a long-time resident of Marsh Lake, died of cancer on May 11, 2024.
Bill was born on June 9, 1958, to Bill and Ann Venton in New Westminster, BC and came to Whitehorse in 1967. In the 1980s, he moved to Marsh Lake and his beloved cabin.
He was a sheet-metal worker for a few years and was proud to point out the buildings he helped build. He worked at Raven Recycling, and later, he also worked for a construction company. At 65, he hung up his tools for good.
If Bill didn’t know how to do something, he learned how. He was a self-taught mechanic so when he hitchhiked for parts, he knew what to get. He built a greenhouse from recycled windows and lumber and graduated from Yukon College’s Master Gardener program.
For much of his adult life, Bill was addicted. A near-death experience made him turn his life around and he was sober his last 18 years.
His ‘chicken’ jokes and generosity will be missed by all who knew him. And he always enjoyed his Starbucks lattes.
Bill leaves his siblings, Bonnie Venton Ross (Bruce), Dwayne (Jackie) and nephew Jacob and niece Emily, Bobbi-Jean Millwater (Bill) and Debbie-Lea (Stephan), and uncle John.
We will lay Bill to rest at 2 pm on Sunday, June 9 at Grey Mountain Cemetery. For details, contact Bonnie at
332-5750.
The family thanks the nursing staff at Whitehorse General Hospital. Please make donations to Humane Society Yukon or the Food Bank in Bill’s memory.
