Caroline (Carol) Lenore Nelson (nee Kahl)

It is with deep sadness that I share with you the news of Carol’s passing, ending a 12-year confinement to a wheelchair. Carol passed these trying years without complaint, treating her caregivers with kindness and retaining her sense of humor.

Born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Carol moved to the Yukon permanently in 1972, shortly after which she had a serious car accident. Through her unwavering determination, she proved her doctors wrong by first surviving the accident and learning to walk again.

During her lifetime, Carol worked at several jobs: as a postal worker, office administrator for Pacific Northwest Moving, office worker for Whitehorse Transit and Bus Driver for Whitehorse Transit. During the 1974 bowling season, together we leased the Whitehorse Bowling Alley located in the basement of the Whitehorse Inn Hotel.

Carol fell in love with the Yukon and the opportunity it offered to enjoy the outdoors. She was fond of boating, particularly partaking in river trips. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and hiking along the Yukon River. In the autumn months, picking low bush cranberries was a passion while in the summer months, her spare hours were spent in her garden, winning the Best Garden Competition in 2006.

She also enjoyed our Yukon winters and for many years cross country skied at every opportunity.

Carol is survived by her partner of 49 years, Frank, her son Jordon, (Brenda), granddaughter Christie (Jesse), grandson, Josh, great grandson, Xander, and great granddaughter, Kaelyn. Caroline also leaves her sisters Geraldine – Saskatoon, Sask., Louise – Kelowna, BC, and Dianne – Battleford, Sask., her sister-in-law, Donna Kahl – Victoria, BC, as well as a myriad of nieces and nephews in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

We will be holding a celebration of Caroline’s life in Whitehorse in July. Exact details to be announced at a later date.

I would like to extend my appreciation to the many Caregivers who over the years shared their kindness and skills to create some sunshine and warmth in Carol’s days. To the staff at Whitehorse Homecare, the staff at the Thompson Centre Long Term Care Facility and the staff at Whistle Bend Place Long Term Care Facility. Thank you.
