Herbert Cameron “Cam” Deeks

Cam Deeks of Whitehorse, Yukon passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Cam was born in Swan River, Manitoba.

Cam was predeceased by his wife Marge of 66 years in September of 2019. Cam is survived by his three children, Doug Deeks of Whitehorse, Yukon; Lorne (Denise) Deeks of Rivercourse, Alberta; and daughter Jeanette (Lionel) Malka of Rivercourse, Alberta; grandchildren Roger (Karla) Deeks of Lloydminster, Alberta; Jennifer (Jeff) Bogdan of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Ashley (Gordon) Gisi of Rivercourse, Alberta; and Jenelle (fiancé Brendan Bamber) of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan; great-grandchildren Ryanna, Brynn, and Mason Deeks, Katla Bogdan, and Presley and Nash Gisi.  Cam also leaves to mourn his siblings Lorraine (Eugene) Leniuk of Petersfield, Manitoba; Margaret Corson of Mafeking, Manitoba; and Sarah (Ed) O’Gorman of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Cam first came to the Yukon in 1953 and worked in Dawson City and the Granville area for the summer. He returned to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he met his wife Marge of 66 years. Cam and Marge married and returned to Dawson City where Cam worked in the Granville and North Fork areas. This is when their two sons Doug and Lorne were born.

Cam and Marge briefly moved back to Lone Rock, Saskatchewan where their daughter Jeanette was born. While in Saskatchewan Cam got his pilot license. And then it was back to Dawson City where Cam and Marge built the “Airport Lunch Café & Gas Station”.  In mid-July, a fire destroyed their dream, so Cam decided to move the family to Whitehorse where he began building their forever home in Porter Creek.

Cam’s career took him in many different directions from carpentry work, trucking for White Pass, to starting his own company along with gold mining in Dawson City and Keno.

Aside from hard work Cam really enjoyed flying his planes, hockey playing and watching, and curling in bonspiels in Dawson and Faro. In the later years Cam enjoyed his boat and taking family and friends out on the water.

Cam was cremated and his family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date. Cam’s family would like to thank the staff at Whistle Bend Place and Heritage North Funeral Home for all their care and guidance.
