Katherine (Lois) Shopland

January 11, 1926 – November 27, 2023
In loving memory ~

Lois was born in Vancouver, B.C. on January 11, 1926, to Norman and Gladys (McQuillan) Janes. She died in Courtenay at the Comox Valley Hospital November 27, 2023, at the age of 97 years.
Lois spent her early years in Comox Logging Camp 3 where her father was a high rigger. She remembered those days clearly and enjoyed sharing memories of her life there and the summers at Williams Beach. As logging locations began to change, the family moved to a farm at the corner of Bridges and Headquarters Road, where the Janes family still lives. Lois married Jack Shopland on October 26th, 1945, in Courtenay and they raised four children together.
The Comox Valley was always home for Lois, and she contributed to many community groups, reunions, and historical publications.
She lived for over 75 years on the Shopland farm.
Lois’ family was very important to her, and she enjoyed staying in touch with everyone.
Reminiscing about her time as a telephone operator was one of her favourite topics.
Grandma was our social media before such a thing existed-how will we ever know what is going on and who is doing what?
Lois was predeceased by her father Norman in 1981 and her mother Gladys 2001, sister-in-law Audreynn Edin 1984 (Milton1996), her husband Jack 1996, brother Bert Janes 2017, sister Phyllis Hatfield 2019 and Doris Valdivia 2022 (Palma 2014), sister-in-law Joyce Janes 2015 and brother-in-law Ray Smith 2018.
She is survived by her children: Katherine, Barb (Stan), Doug (April), Patricia (Gerry), 8 grandchildren: Dawn (John) Larissa, Stacey (Pat) Kristopher (Christina) Sarah (Rod) Amy (Glen) Kelly (Galyn) and Emily (Cory), 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Lois is also survived by her brother Earl Janes of Duncan, BC and sister Margaret Smith of Calgary, AB, sister-in-law Darlene Janes of Courtenay, brother-in-law John Hatfield of Courtenay as well as many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was well known as Grandma Shop to many in her large extended family.
Having her borrowed son Larry Rennison (Terry) right next door, allowed Lois to stay in her home until a few weeks ago.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nursing team on Floor 3A for their kind compassionate care of Lois.
There will be no service by her request. A private family gathering will take place later. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to the Courtenay and District Museum.
