OBITUARY: JOHN WAYNE FLOYD News Staff Wed, 02/05/2025 - 10:36 Subheader body July 1, 1945 — February 2, 2025 In-page image(s) X Body John Wayne Floyd of Canadian passed into his heavenly home on Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Canadian with his family by his side.Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Thursday, February 6, at the First Baptist Church of Canadian. Burial with Military Honors will be 2 pm at the Erick Cemetery in Erick, Oklahoma. John’s brother, Charlie Floyd, will be officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Canadian.John was born July 1,1945, in Erick, Oklahoma to Dudley William and Anna Florine Barnes Floyd. He attended schools in Mobeetie, Miami, and Wheeler, and graduated from Erick High School. John was the middle of five boys—loved his brothers Ronnie, David, Charlie and T.L.—and was a member of the Erick First Baptist Church. At age 14, John started working for farmers near Spearman, bringing him to his life’s work in the Texas Panhandle. In 1969, John was drafted into the US Army and served in the 1st Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, spending one year in Vietnam near the Fish Hook area. He earned many medals and awards for his service and bravery, including 2 Bronze Stars and a Combat Infantry Badge.Two sons were born to John and his wife Judabeth “JB” Lovett Floyd—Wayne in 1968 and Travis in 1974. They made their home in Booker.John later married Ilene Hance Floyd on January 14, 1989, and they made their home in Canadian. He was a self-employed Dirt Contractor for all of his life besides his service years, having founded John Floyd Earth Moving in 1975. 2025 marks 50 years of business for John Floyd Earth Moving. A successful business owner, John’s skillful work with heavy equipment can still be seen in perfect terraces in area fields, waterways, roads and oilfield locations. His quality work was sought after by many oil companies and Texas Panhandle farmers and ranchers.In addition to running a business, John served on the Booker City Council for 6 years and then as Precinct 1 Lipscomb County Commissioner for 12 years.John’s interests and passions included wagons and mules, restoring and putting his own signature on classic cars, his well-curated juke box in his car barn, dragging Main to oldies tunes, breakfast with his favorites at the Canadian Restaurant, running cattle for several years and working cattle—and all that goes with that—with close friend and neighbor, Eddie Longhofer, and reliving stories of both hard and hilarious times with his beloved four brothers.John is survived by his wife, Ilene, of the home; two sons, Wayne Floyd and wife Kayla, and Travis Floyd and wife Sara; daughter Brandi Collins Wright and husband Derek, and brother Charlie Floyd and wife Alyce; grandchildren Allison Floyd, Kelsey Floyd Wise, Jessica Floyd, Rachel Floyd and husband Tate Williams, Baylee Floyd, and John William “Howdy” Floyd, Chas Wright and Brynne Wright, and great-grandson Colt Wise, as well as beloved nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Dudley and Florine Floyd; his brothers, Ronald, David and T.L.
