Owen Verity Bentley

August 7, 1956 – November 20, 2023
In loving memory ~
Owen Verity Bentley was born in Nanaimo, BC on August 7th, 1956, predeceased by his parents Norman and Sonia Bentley, and lived most of his life in Victoria and most recently in Nanaimo, BC.
Owen was diagnosed with colon cancer in July 2023 and bravely fought for the last 5 months. He passed away November 20, 2023, in Nanaimo at the age of 67, at a time of his own choosing, held tightly in the arms of his loving wife, soul mate and best friend Laura Meyer of Nanaimo and holding hands with his sister Pam Bentley of Parksville.
“O”, as he was affectionately known, had some very good friends that helped him throughout his life and continued to do so during his illness and to them we send love and thanks on Owen’s behalf.
Owen loved cars and owned many of them in his life, everything from cruisers to his latest car a BMW convertible. He spent many happy hours, with the top down, enjoying drives with his beloved wife.
The travelling bug was firmly planted when “O” followed his wife to live in California and China and then in his retirement years he fulfilled his dream of travelling and spending the winters away in Spain. He loved the adventure and surprise that travel afforded him.
Owen left this world a better place, and we are all richer to have known him.
He will be sorely missed.
He leaves you with this quote, which he thought was the best line ever written in music: And in the end, The love you take, is equal to the love you make.
Thank you to all the doctors and nurses in the Palliative Care in Nanaimo General Hospital for their compassion and making Owen’s last days as comfortable as possible and sharing his final journey. You truly are angels.
A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Owen’s life will be planned sometime in the future.
