In loving memory ~
It is with profound sadness that we as a family announce the passing of Roger Massey on Thursday, May 18, at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife Annelies, his children Mike, Heather, Chris (Jenney), and Luke; and his many grandchildren Ami, Emily, Keenan, Kaitlyn, Madi, Samantha, Tessa, and Amelia, and great-grandchildren Averie and Karson.
Roger first arrived in the Cowichan Valley in 1972 after leaving the military as an Officer in the Royal Canadian Airforce to be a supervisor and then Manager, of the Telesat Satellite Earth Station near Cowichan Lake. In 1977 he would become the Clerk of Works, overseeing the construction of the Cowichan Community Centre, and then the manager of the theatre. Later with his love of electronics, took work at the Crofton Mill in the electrical department until he retired.
He had an enthusiasm for computer technology and in 1975 home built his first microcomputer. Later with a network of over 40 computers in the crawl space of his home, processed data for Seti, Protein Synthesis Studies, Climate Modelling and many more, and actually rivalled some major Universities in raw data crunching in trying to understand the universe.
He always had a profound love of nature and animals, and every year had a massive vegetable and flower garden.
Many thanks to Dr. Reimer, the staff of CDH, and Deer Trail Cottage for their excellent care and compassion.
