In loving memory ~
Greg “Diesel” Powers age 65 departed this life on May 21st, 2023 after a lengthy illness.
Greg was born in Duncan BC to parents Vernon and Lea Powers on June 22, 1957. Greg attended and graduated from Lake Cowichan Secondary School as valedictorian of his class while working after school, and weekends at Al Lawrence Men’s Wear clothing store.
He went on to have 4 boys with wife Cathy. Those boys would later bless Greg with 6 grandchildren. His grandchildren were the highlight of his life and he would spend hours attending sporting events that they were participating in.
He went to work as a log loader operator in Wakeman Sound and Nekite River and had many stories about his time there.
But the job that most remember him for was selling cars! He worked for most of his career at Hindle Pontiac Buick GMC and Peter Baljet GM, there aren’t too many people in the Cowichan Valley that haven’t driven a car sold by Diesel!
Greg then married the love of his life Deb deLure in 2006 in the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.
Deb & Greg loved to travel and spent many great times in Mexico with friends Al Ketch and Lori Ketch and Jen & Ian Woike and at their place in Las Vegas. Road tripping was something they also enjoyed and in the recent years saw them purchase the MOHO and camp up and down the island.
Greg grew up involved in sports he was playing hockey, coaching hockey and refereeing hockey all at the same time in Lake Cowichan at the new arena that his dad Vernon helped fundraise to build and all while not being old enough yet to drive himself to the rink.
He played Jr B hockey in Lake Cowichan, later playing hockey with the Ol’ Hustlers team even doing 2 tours to Europe to play his favorite game over there.
Later in life he loved to golf with his boys, played slow-pitch and curled.
He was a member of the Kinsmen Club of Duncan.
Greg loved good food and he Deb were part of a special group of friends that belonged to the elusive “Dinner Club” that has been going strong for 13 years. There will always be a spot at the Dinner Club table for you Diesel.
Greg is predeceased by his father Vernon Powers, his step father Edward Langkamer, brother in law Russ Hazard and a close cousin Anne Lane.
Greg is survived by his mother Lea Langkamer, his wife Deborah Powers, sons Christopher Powers (Kirsten), Kurt Powers (Marnie), Kelsey Powers (Jessica), Cory Powers (Helena) and step sons Curt Berti (Kylynn), Matt Schmidt, step daughter Sarah Schmidt and his beloved dog Ted; sisters Teresa Powers(Darrin McKone), Gail Hazard, Linda Powers (Kevin Atkinson),and close cousin Ryan Langkamer (Jennifer). Greg had a special spot in his heart for his grandchildren Linden Powers, Milo Powers, Mcrae Berrow, Carson Powers, Aden Meaver and Maerin Dartnell. There are many special Aunts and Uncles and cousins.
Uncle Greg will be remembered for his quick witted jokes and words of support he had for all of his nieces and nephews, he truly was everyone’s biggest cheerleader!
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you each take time to check in with a friend you haven’t heard from for a while, hug your kids a little tighter or call your mom and tell her you love her.
